Lesson 5: Operating Systems

Problem:
You're the owner of a technology consulting firm. Your current assignments include advising start-up clients on their technology requirements. The companies include a nonprofit social service organization, a small interior design firm, and a social media advertising agency.

Because the OS is the most critical piece of software in the computer system, the selection should not be taken lightly. The OS that is best for a nonprofit social service organization may not be the best for an interior design firm. A social media advertising agency may have different needs altogether. It is important to make sure that you consider all aspects of the work environment and the type of work being done.



Process:
Research the pros and cons of each OS (Windows, Mac OS, Linux). What features does it have that would benefit each company(interior design, social media advertising, and nonprofit social service)? What features does it not have that each company would need? Create a list of pros and cons.
Based on your list, share why each OS would be the appropriate or inappropriate choice for each company in one sentence.
Decide which OS would be the best choice for each company (Windows, Mac OS, or Linux).

B. Break-up Letter Picture yourself writing a break-up letter to an operating system or application that has caused you frustration, annoyance, or disappointment. Express your feelings honestly while using a touch of humor.

How does this activity reflect the role that technology plays in our lives?

Dear YouTube,

We had a great time together in elementary and middle school. From Logan Paul vlogs to Oversimplified videos about history. You were there for me late at nights or when I needed to know something for school. But now we see each other so little only when I'm doing Laundry or need more understanding on a topic for school. I have found someone better we both know who so Ill just say it but TikTok has taken my heart. You have tried to change your self for me to be like TikTok. That isn't what you should do. I'm sorry but we must part ways. It's not you it's me I have changed and need to move on.

Reflection Questions

I choose YouTube as when I was younger I always used YouTube and was always watching videos and it felt like the right one to write a breakup letter for as I barely use YouTube now.

I felt sadness as I remembered watching all my favorite YouTube creators.

Technology plays a big roll in our lives as it allows use to stay connected. We are able to know what's going on in the other side of the world as it happens. Through live streaming and people posting on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites. Without technology we wouldn't know about these events until awhile after it happens.

Through this process of writing a letter I have realized how dependent I am on technology as when I want to relax and chill I go on my phone an watch TikTok or before TikTok when I would get home from school I would watch a YouTube video and watch them the entire night no matter what I was doing.
