Lesson 11: Privacy

Assignment Instructions

Go to Review the Data and Privacy section on the left to see what personal information has been saved. What types of information did you find? Also, review and update your privacy settings.
Google yourself. Try different variations of your name. Did you find any information about yourself? Do you have a common name that gives you lots of results or an uncommon one that nets you fewer?
Now try two more websites like zabasearch.com, spokeo.com, pipl.com, whitepages.com, addresses.com. Did you find any additional information about yourself? Was it correct? Is there a way to have the entry removed from the site?

Submit your answers to the following questions:
1. What kinds of information about yourself are you giving away when you use apps like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat?
2. What information did you find in the Personal Information and Privacy section on Google?
3. Did you find any information about yourself when you googled your name? Do you have a common name that gives you lots of results or an uncommon one that nets you fewer?
4. What two sites did you try? Did you find any additional information about yourself? Was it correct? Is there a way to have the entry removed from the site?

Discussion Post

Prompt:
Cultural analysts have argued that privacy is less important to a generation that grew up with YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and texting. On the other hand, this same generation has grown up with database technology more ubiquitous and capable than ever before. Think about how many times this week you've been involved (knowingly or not) with database systems. How do you think the tension between privacy and database technology will or should play out as powerful database applications become ever more pervasive in our world?

Post:
I am always on my phone when I am relaxing I go on my phone and scroll through TikTok and Instagram. I am pretty sure both take my data and go and sell it or use it because what I see is generally the same stuff or if I feel like I want to watch something or liked what a video was a bout I will continue to see videos about that. But I will also see things I didn't watch on those apps for instance yesterday afternoon I looked up the score of the basketball game and after the game was over I got a TikTok telling me who won the game. This is crazy to me as I didn't even do anything on the app. I also use google every day for school everyday I log onto Canvas on google so I assume they know a lot about me but I was surprised by how much.

I looked up my name in google search bar and I saw my linked in profile picture in the images sections. This did worry me a but now it is not hard to get this information at all but did kind of worry me it was on images knowing that LinkedIn either sold that information to google or google stole it I imagine LinkedIn sold the information. An article published by CNBC discussed about how much google knew about the writer and there was more than I was expecting. The writer said google knew that he turned his bedroom lights on last night this is very worrying to me as it means that there was a camera somewhere I imagine that got that data. Now I know basically all my electronics have cameras and they probably use or sell that data but I assumed it was only the data I took like the videos or pictures I took not a constant video even when my phone is off. The article then went on to talk about how to set your settings so companies can't use or sell certain data I don't feel like I should have to do this I feel like it should be ethically normal that companies should not just take some information like what my phone is always looking at and then sell it to anyone who want's to buy it.

This week I looked up what information about me is on the internet and what companies snow about from my data. I then answered some questions about what I found. I also did a discussion post about data and privacy and information I found researching about what how much companies know from out data.
