Lesson 7: Data Organization

Assignment Instructions

Prompt:
View the CODIS video for background information about this database:
https://youtu.be/d6x-61LwmXk
Visit the FBI website to find out how CODIS has been used to solve cold cases.
Type CODIS cold case solved in the search box and read through the results.
Select one case and write a short summary of the investigation.

Assignment

Discussion Post

Prompt:
Choose one of the following to write about

Finding an Example: Search for a real-world example of an Excel macro. This could be a specific task or process that is automated using macros. Find an example that interests you and has practical applications.

Explanation and Purpose: Share the example you found with the group. Explain the task or process that the macro automates. What is the purpose of automating this task? How does the macro enhance efficiency or accuracy?

Macro Components: If possible, break down the components of the macro. Discuss any coding or scripting involved. What actions or commands does the macro include? How does it interact with Excel's features?

Benefits and Challenges: Discuss the benefits of using a macro in this context. How does it save time, reduce errors, or improve the overall workflow? Are there any potential challenges or limitations associated with using macros for this task?

Customization and Adaptability: Consider whether the macro can be customized or adapted for different scenarios. Can users modify the macro's behavior to suit their needs, or is it designed for a specific purpose?

Learning Resources: Share any resources or tutorials you found that explain how to create similar macros. Are there online guides, videos, or courses that teach users how to implement this type of automation?

Security Considerations: Discuss any security considerations related to using macros in Excel. How can users ensure that the macros they download or create are safe and not a security risk?

A real-world example of using an Excel macro is finding the average and multiplying different cells together. For my EDSGN100 class this semester we were developing prototypes on how to make a ski chair lift better and safer and after we made 4 different prototypes of 4 different ideas we scored each prototype from 1-5 on multiple different categories like safety, comfortability, quick lift, and easy of unloading. We then gave these different categories and percentage of how important they were these percentages all added up to 100%. For us this was safety at 50%, quick lift 20%, comfortability 15%, and easy loading 15%. We then gave each prototype a score of 1-5 for each category. Then using Excel macro we multiple each score with it respective category percentage to find the weighted rating we then found the average of the weighted ratings for each prototype using Excel macro's then compared the prototypes averages to each other to determine which prototype would be the best to further in our design.

This week I wrote a short summary about how CODIS solved an FBI Cold Case. I also did a Discussion post about Excel Macros and how they increase efficiency for users.
